SOMETHINGS HAPPENING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ACROSS AMERICA
Campus Crusade for Christ presents two motivational conferences for teens
By Michael Ireland
Contributing Writer ASSIST Communications

ORLANDO, FLORIDA (October 2, 1999) -- "High school students all across the United States are becoming more convinced than ever that they are a chosen generation selected by God to impact the world in far greater ways than any previous generation," said Mike Wahl, serving as a full time staff member with Student Venture, the high school ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ.

This Fall, Student Venture is organizing two "Something's Happening Y2K" conferences in November 12 - 14. Students will be praying simultaneously at two different locations: one will be held at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Asheville, North Carolina, and the other at the Glorieta Conference Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Glorieta conference in New Mexico will be linked with a satellite feed to another significant youth prayer event in Houston, called the Sleepfast, which is the youth portion of Campus Crusade for Christ's Fasting and Prayer conference being held the same weekend.

The Asheville conference will be held at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Campus Crusade expects 1,200 students, staff and adults to attend. The ministry expects 1,800 students, staff and adults in Santa Fe at the Glorieta Conference Center.

Both conferences are designed to encourage this generation of high school students to meet the challenges of the new millennium with a renewed faith in the Lord.

Wahl said: "With the main emphasis of the SHY2K conference being prayer, we expect the Lord to meet these students in an incredible way. They will be strengthened in their beliefs by our speakers and spend focused time in prayer for their schools, friends and families. Then they will be equipped to share their faith and actually spend an afternoon doing an outreach. When they go home, they will be able to back to their schools to win other students to the Lord Jesus Christ with a definite action plan."

After attending a workshop at the Fastbreak Conference held by Student Venture last Christmas, one student said: "This is what the church is missing. We've been called to share Christ with everyone in the whole world and we can only do it with the Holy Spirit!" The student later had an opportunity to share that very night, since his church was "praying in" the New Year and he had been asked to lead a portion of the prayer meeting.

Why is Campus Crusade mobilizing students to pray?

"Prayer is the fire which fuels the doing of the ministry, the winning of students to Christ, the building of them in Christ, and the sending of them to their world for Christ. The hotter the furnace glows, the greater the ministry and impact for the Savior on campuses and around the world becomes." [quote taken from Dan Hayes, author of "Fireseeds of Spiritual Awakening."]

Christian youth can find out more about these two conferences by logging on to the Something's Happening website at:
http://www.somethingshappeningy2k.com . This website has all the information including numbers for youth leaders and students to get in contact with someone from their area who may be going. Campus Crusade also has a toll free number students can call to order more of the brochures and a promo video: 1-800-699-4678.

Wahl concluded: "Just based on the amount of spiritual warfare that is taking place all across the United States, I believe this is a significant time in all of Christian History because this generation has been chosen by the Lord to reach the world in far greater ways than any previous generation. This is the Generation X, (where the X is for Extraordinary because God is preparing a new generation of godly Christian leaders who will rise up and become the next Martin Luther, Dwight L. Moody or Billy Graham)."

Scholarly Writing Explained

The following list of phrases and their definitions might help you understand the mysterious language of science and medicine. These special phrases are also applicable to anyone working on a Ph.D. dissertation or academic paper anywhere!

"It has long been known"... I didn't look up the original reference.

"A definite trend is evident"... These data are practically meaningless.

"While it has not been possible to provide definite answers to the questions"... An unsuccessful experiment, but I still hope to get it published.

"Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study"... The other results didn't make any sense.

"Typical results are shown"... This is the prettiest graph.

"These results will be in a subsequent report"... I might get around to this sometime, if pushed/funded.

"In my experience"... once "In case after case"... twice "In a series of cases"... thrice "It is believed that"... I think.

"It is generally believed that"... A couple of others think so, too.

"Correct within an order of magnitude"... Wrong.

"According to statistical analysis"... Rumor has it.

"A statistically oriented projection of the significance of these findings"... A wild guess.

"A careful analysis of obtainable data"... Three pages of notes were obliterated when I knocked over a glass of pop.

"It is clear that much additional work will be required before a complete understanding of this phenomenon occurs"... I don't understand it.

"After additional study by my colleagues"... They don't understand it either.

"Thanks are due to Joe Blotz for assistance with the experiment and to Cindy Adams for valuable discussions"... Mr. Blotz did the work and Ms. Adams explained to me what it meant.

"A highly significant area for exploratory study"... A totally useless topic selected by my committee.

"It is hoped that this study will stimulate further investigation in this field"... I quit.

An Educated List
Submitted by F. Bills

This is from a superintendent of schools. He wrote a book for high school and college graduates...a list of things they did not learn in school. In his book, he talks about how feel good, "politically-correct" teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality, and set them up for failure in the real world. You may want to share this list with someone you know.

Rule 1.
Life is not fair; get used to it.

Rule 2.
The world won't care about your self-esteem The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3.
You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4.
If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.

Rule 5.
Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity.

Rule 6.
If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes. Learn from them.

Rule 7.
Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes, and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So, before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8.
Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades. They'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9.
Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off, and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10.
Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11.
Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
