Homecoming
Have you ever been on a
vacation or long trip? Remember how it felt to finally
begin your journey home? Even if you had a wonderful
time, it felt sooo good to be headed home!
There's just something
about being home... It's a place we can relax, get
comfortable, just be ourselves. A place where we
belong.... which is part of the reason we're so glad to
return home. Your home may be owned or rented, palatial
or quite humble as is my own, but it is your own special
place in the world. I am thinking of a lady who has lived
in a motel for seven years! To her, that tiny space is
home, and she shares the inborn longing we all have for
our homes.
God put that special
yearning for home in our hearts, and it can be only
partially satisfied by our earthly homes. We won't be
completely fulfilled until we move into the heavenly
mansion Jesus went to prepare for us. Think about that
for a moment....
Have you ever prepared
for the homecoming of loved one? You got the house all
tidied up, lavishly sprayed air freshener in every room,
maybe set out fresh flowers or made a "Welcome
Home" sign. You had great fun and thought of the
loved one returning home as you worked.
Now, imagine the joy
Jesus feels as He prepares for your heavenly homecoming.
I can just see Him smiling as He sees to every detail,
setting all in place to exactly fit our tastes. He savors
the thought of our joy and surprise when we see how
carefully and lovingly He has made these preparations
just for each of us.
So as I go about my
daily housekeeping chores, I envision the Lord setting
all in order in my heavenly home. It helps me love my
earthly home the more while I have yet a deeper longing
for the heavenly one.
Thank
You, Lord

Lord, thank you for
this sink of dirty dishes we have plenty of food to
eat.
Thank you for this pile of dirty, stinky laundry; we
have plenty of nice clothes to wear.
And I would like to thank you, Lord, for those unmade
beds; they were so warm and comfortable last night. I
know that many have no bed.
My thanks to you, Lord, for this bathroom, complete
with all the splattered mirrors, soggy, grimy towels
and dirty lavatory; they are so convenient.
Thank you for this finger-smudged refrigerator that
needs defrosting so badly;
It has served us faithfully for many years. It is
full of cold drinks and enough leftovers for 2 or 3
meals.
Thank you, Lord, for this oven that absolutely must
be cleaned today. It has baked so many things over
the years.
The whole family is grateful for that tall grass that
needs mowing, the lawn that needs raking; we all
enjoy the yard.
Thank you, Lord, even for that slamming screen door.
My kids are healthy and able to run and play.
Lord, the presence of all these chores awaiting me
says You have richly blessed my family. I shall do
them cheerfully and I shall do them gratefully.
God is Like...
