Stewardship Topics
Just A Thought
By Staff Writer Sharon Barrett

Philippians 3:8 a. "I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord."

Do you consider everything a loss compared to the greatness of Jesus? All things are supplied by Jesus, all things are done in his name, does this not make him great? Yes, to those who put him foremost in their lives. Pray for those who think they can do all things themselves, who put all their confidence in the flesh of man instead of in Christ.

Stop Worrying About Finances
By Jovak Von Hess

Scripture says money, or I should say our obsession with money, is the root of all evil. People cite financial issues as the chief cause of marital dispute and admit to more worry over wealth than health or any other facet of their lives, even love!

Knowing man's tendency to place higher trust in material things than the Lord, God caused more Bible verses to be written on the subject of money and possessions than any other topic including salvation itself.

In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus bids us to consider the lilies of the field and the birds in the air... to note how splendidly mere grass is "clothed," and how tenderly a tiny sparrow is cared for.

But then we turn on the TV, see children dying of starvation. How can we explain that? Well, beloved, we can't! Oh yes, we could be drawn into endless theological debates, examine the semantics, analyze and scrutinize ad nauseum, but for what?

In the end, it all comes down to simple and child-like faith. Either we believe or we don't -- that's all there is to it.

If we believe scripture, we know that all material things belong to God, anyway; we know He is able and He loves us completely, hence we can trust Him with the problem even if it is one of our own making. If we do not believe, all the worry we invest will not reap a positive outcome -- it is Christ we need, not cash!

Since God made made and owns all wealth, just as He created each of us, He has wisely chosen to place certain of His assets in our care depending on His divine plan for each individual. It's a matter of stewardship, not ownership, but I doubt most folks who fret over finances are as concerned over their performance as stewards as they are about acquiring the next item on their want list, making the next payment on the car or even funding a planned weekend outing. But again, worry will not improve your bottom line.

Perhaps it's guilt that destroys your peace. You may be in a fiscal mess of your own making and while the Father may allow you to learn from these mistakes by enduring their natural consequences, He is right there with you all the while and will not permit the load to become too heavy to bear. Take your guilt and remorse to the foot of the cross and leave them with Jesus. Now you are free. You may have to do without some things, and others may not see you as a "success," but walk tall and proud for in Christ, you are more than a conqueror!

No matter what your financial circumstance, God is working in it and through it for your best good, and He knows what He's doing! Talk with Him about it and walk in trust. You may need to turn away negative thought and worry many times a day at first, but before long, money worries will be a thing of the past for you, whether you are in poverty or wealth.
